The symptoms or the type pain you feel can be used to identify the cause of the back pain you feel on the lower right side of the back. Is the pain a stabbing type pain or perhaps a sharp electrical type pain, or is it more like a sore muscle ache type of pain you would feel from over worked muscles?

If you are experiencing soreness or aching type pain then the pain is being caused by muscle irritation due to a strain or perhaps tightening of an over worked muscle. In either case, you can get relief by applying heat to the area of the ache or soreness.

If the pain you are feeling is stabbing, burning, tingling, numbing, or electrical shock type of pain then, this is normally an indicator of a problem with the sciatic nerve. For those experiencing this pain for the first time, it is advisable to see a physician to properly diagnose and pin-point the problem.

There are quite a few things that can cause problems with the sciatic nerve and in order to treat sciatica (the term used to characterize lower back pain caused by the sciatic nerve) you need to know the underlying cause, and your doctor may be able to pinpoint the underlying cause. This is the first step toward discovering the reasons for the lower back pain, regardless of what side it may be on.

At times it can be difficult for even a physician to determine the underlying cause of sciatica. This is because sciatica can be, at times, a master of illusion, shifting from one side to the other, or running down the back of the leg or legs. Sciatica can be severe one minute and mild or even disappear the next, only to return even more severe than before.

A heating pad is the best way to deal with sore or aching muscles however, dealing with sciatic nerve pain (sciatica) is more difficult. Seeing a doctor to pinpoint the problem with the sciatic nerve will help in determining the best treatment options available. Since I have been there myself, I just want you to know that the doctor, after discovering the exact cause if he or she can, will most likely tell you two weeks or more of bed rest will be the only way to fix your problem.
